About Us

I’m Lena. Welcome to the Living Room You Can Actually Live In

I was 36 when I stood in the doorway of my newly renovated living room and realized I was afraid to sit on my own sofa.

I had spent months, and far too much money, chasing a pristine, ultra-minimalist aesthetic I had curated on endless inspiration boards. The beige linen couch was flawless. The sculptural marble coffee table was striking. But the room felt entirely cold. When my best friend came over and poured a glass of red wine, I found myself holding my breath in a panic. I had built a museum exhibit, not a sanctuary. I sat down on a rigid, architecturally impressive armchair that hurt my back and realized a house that doesn’t allow you to relax isn’t a home at all.

That stiff, uncomfortable afternoon was the quiet beginning of Sanctuary Style.

Why Your Home Deserves Better Than “Showroom Perfect”

The modern interior design industry sells us an exhausting mirage. It demands we hide every charging cable, banish all color in favor of greige, and pretend our families don’t own brightly colored plastic objects or mismatched mugs. It creates spaces designed for photographs, not for real life.

I started this site for people who are tired of apologizing for the fact that their house actually looks lived in. You might be a renter trying to make a temporary apartment feel permanent, a parent exhausted by the pressure of the beige aesthetic, or someone who simply wants a reading nook that is genuinely comfortable. Whichever you are, you belong here.

A Few Things You Should Know About Me

  • I own exactly zero white upholstered furniture. I learned that expensive lesson a long time ago.
  • I live in a slightly crooked, drafty apartment in Hamburg where no two floorboards quite match.
  • I firmly believe that warm, low lighting can fix almost any design flaw in a room.
  • I keep a dedicated woven basket at the bottom of the stairs exclusively for random daily clutter, and I am fiercely protective of it.

How We Earn Your Trust

The internet is flooded with house tours that hide the reality of daily life just out of the camera’s frame. We don’t do that here. Every styling tip, storage hack, or product review on Sanctuary Style is tested in a real home where people eat, sleep, and occasionally spill things. If a beautiful rug sheds terribly or a trendy chair is miserable to sit in, we will explicitly tell you. Any time a piece of content includes an affiliate link or sponsored product, it is clearly marked at the top of the page.

One Last Thing

If you have read this far, you are probably looking for permission to stop fighting your own space. You have it. There is nothing wrong with a home that holds the beautiful, messy evidence of your life. The magazines that made you feel bad about your comfortable, colorful, lived-in rooms were the problem.

Put your feet on the coffee table, leave your current book on the sofa, and build a space that actually takes care of you.
